"Fierce Love"

The Story Behind "Fierce Love" (Lyrics)

One of my biggest irritations with the English language is the dumbed down nature of one of the most important words -- “love.” The same word in the English language is used to express so many vastly different things. Yet, in other languages, there are different forms of the word love for different usages, such as God’s love to man, brotherly love, and romantic love.

Long story short, I am very not okay with the fact that I use the same word to describe my affections toward brownies as I do toward my boyfriend. Not okay.

Love is a strange animal – and I have spent years trying to understand it, trying to grasp the concept of real, fierce love. Love that does not doubt, is patient, and will absolutely never let go.

And I feel like I have gotten a better grasp of love – love as a constant choice, not just a feeling. But, as I fall more and more in love, I seem to not only understand love more but even understand it less. Cause love is an unknown animal – full of choice, yet also full of feeling.

I wrote “Fierce Love” as what I call a free write: where you take one word or a short phrase, set a timer for approximately 5-10 minutes, and write without stopping. One day over winter break of my junior year in college I had been pondering the phrase "Fierce Love.” What is love, and how do you love fiercely? So, I sat down, and in approximately 30 minutes, I wrote a song that I haven’t changed a word of.

“Fierce Love”

Passion overflows like a waterfall of love.

Sometimes so painfully the water wets your face.

Fierceful loving can be a source of pain.

Fierceful loving can be what makes you sing.

It's full of every major and minor tone

-

It's a constant song that changes every day

Moods fluctuating, desires in the waiting, but love that stays the same

It's silence and screaming

Tears and heart ache

But it's people returning to pull back your hair

To give you an ear to let you know they're there.

To put on another blanket when the waterfall gets cold

To keep you warm. To hold you tight.

Fierce love isn't always pleasant, but it sustains the night.

-

The ink won't stop writing, it will not run dry

Cause fierce love tells the truth and never a lie

It mends what is broken and builds another door

That door will not shut 'til you're together once more

It's like stars in the sky - fog passes through -

But they won't stop shining

Just because they don't see you.

They don't see you

-

Fierce love is the taste of mercy and grace;

Forgiveness that rolls off the tongue with haste.

Fierce love is a passion that will not run dry

Although it may freeze it refuses to die.

-

Passion overflows like a waterfall of love.
